Top Things Happening In Calgary this Weekend....
Inspirational Person I'm Digging This Week: Andrew Carnegie
Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish-American industrialist who led the enormous expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century. He built a leadership role as a philanthropist for the United States and the British Empire. During the last 18 years of his life, he gave away to charities, foundations, and universities about $350 million. (in 2015 share of GDP, $78.6 billion) – BILLION !!. This amounted to almost 90 percent of his fortune. His 1889 article proclaiming "The Gospel of Wealth" called on the rich to use their wealth to improve society, and it stimulated a wave of philanthropy.
Locally, the first Calgary public library ( Memorial Park Branch ) opened on January 2, 1912, thanks in part to the generosity of Scottish / American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie funded $80,000 of the $100,000 cost of Calgary’s Central Library, (now renamed the Memorial Park Branch), pressuring City Hall to fund the rest.
Carnegie also convinced / commissioned ( although it was without pay ) for Napoleon Hill to to spend 20 years of his life interviewing and studying the greatest successes of his generation - and ultimately created The Law of Success, and the seminal Think and Grow Rich
"I should consider it a disgrace to die a rich man" -Andrew Carnegie, 1887
What I'm listening to / reading: MONEY Master the Game: 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom
Author: Tony RobbinsBased on extensive research and one-on-one interviews with more than 50 of the most legendary financial experts in the world—from Carl Icahn and Warren Buffett, to Ray Dalio and Steve Forbes—Tony Robbins has created a simple 7-step blueprint that even us 'regular' folks can use for financial freedom.
It's a MASSIVE book - 600+ pages / 18+ hrs audio. Lots to digest and frankly I get lost in the ocean of investment options / jargon / fees etc.
From what I am internalizing already is that Managed Mutual Funds are extremely heavy on FEES because they are not obligated to disclose all fees. Again I have a lot to read yet - but all the Billionaires who know who to beat the system are recommending low cost Index Funds and some other strategies. When I do finish the book , I will try to summarize the 7 concepts :)
