Great Lesson For Today
Edwin Albert Link - in the 1920s, he developed the Link Trainer, what we know now as a flight simulator. For years and years Edwin could not convince any legitimate pilot training schools to utilize his invention. Despite HUGE pilot fatality rates (25%), the military and commercial leaders of aviation laughed at Edwin’s idea of ‘training pilots on the ground’.
At the time, the accepted method of training pilots involved flying prospective pilots in the sky and doing rolls and flips and dramatic maneuvers, and if you didn’t get sick, you were deemed a pilot. The idea was that pilots were born rather than trained. The aviation industry laughed at Edwin’s ‘toy’.
It took nearly 10 years for Edwin to convince the aviation establishment of his superior method of pilot training and eventually he went on to build pilot training / simulators that quickly and effectively trained all the pilots in WWII and later even astronauts at NASA.
So what do we take from this today?
